In John 10, Jesus was explaining to the Pharisees who he was. He also stated that the good shepherd gives his life for the sheep. Jesus gave his life for us, the sheep. This verse reminds me of the African-American spiritual, "Were You There?"
Were You There
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Were you there when God raised him from the tomb?
Were you there when God raised him from the tomb?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when God raised him from the tomb?
Can you hear the Roman soldier hammering in the spikes? Can you hear Jesus groan as the cross is slid into a hole and lifted upright? Can you hear the weeping of Jesus' followers? The good shepherd gave his life for the sheep.
